In an exploration of the lives of people damaged by war, the Australian Art Orchestra performed Sometimes Home Can Grow Stranger Than Space, comprising world premieres of works by composers Andrea Keller, Tilman Robinson and AAO Artistic Director Peter Knight. Inspired by stories of those who returned from the battlefields of Gallipoli, the Somme, Passchendaele, and Verdun, Sometimes Home Can Grow Stranger than Space focusses on those who tried to pick up their ‘normal’ lives after the war.
This was everything you'd expect from the AAO. A work that was innovative and challenging. A soundscape created using a combination of traditional and non-traditional instuments and techniques, requiring the listener / observer to think, understand and empathise. Not easy listening, but well-conceived and performed.
